Planning an Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit: 7 Things to Decide First
-
Niche Fireplace Team
An outdoor fireplace or fire pit table is one of the most-used upgrades you can add to a patio. Because it lives outside, a few decisions matter more than they would indoors. Work through these before you choose a product.
1. Fire pit, fire table or fireplace?
A fire pit is a social centerpiece people gather around. A fire pit table adds a dining or drink ledge. An outdoor fireplace is a vertical feature that frames a seating area, blocks wind and throws heat in one direction. Pick based on how you will use the space.
2. Gas or wood
Propane and natural gas light instantly, produce no smoke and are allowed in many places where wood fires are not. Wood gives you the campfire experience but needs storage and clean-up. Most of the fire pit tables we sell are gas; outdoor fireplaces are available in both.
3. Propane tank or gas line
A hidden 20 lb propane tank is the simplest option and most fire tables are built around one. A natural gas line never runs out but must be installed by a licensed plumber. Decide early because many units are ordered as either LP or NG.
4. Location and clearances
Keep fire features away from the house, fences, overhangs and tree branches. Manufacturers list the exact clearances in the manual, and local fire codes may add their own rules.
5. Surface
Fire pits need a level, non-combustible surface such as pavers, concrete or gravel. A wood deck usually needs a heat-shield pad underneath.
6. Materials and weather
Look for powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel or glass-fiber reinforced concrete. Order a cover; it is the single best way to extend the life of any outdoor unit.
7. Heat output
Fire tables typically produce 40,000 to 65,000 BTUs, enough to take the chill off a seating area. If you want to heat a larger patio in cool weather, pair the fire feature with a patio heater.
